THE MAIN WINDS OF LAKE GARDA

Anyone who visited Lake Garda can confirm that this place is characterized by a very special and fascinating weather and climate. The two main lake Garda winds are thermal winds, which means they are bound to the heating of the earth and the water. In Malcesine they blow consistent during the summer months and contribute to optimal conditions for all kinds watersports. Generally speaking, on days with good weather, the wind blows from the north in the morning, then changes direction at noon and thereafter blows from the south.

      Pelér - The north wind

The king of all lake Garda winds. It starts to blow during the night and usually lasts until midday. Its most power is generated, when the sun comes out at around 8am.

The Pelér not only gets stronger than the Ora, but forms bigger sets of waves, creating great spring-boards for windsurfers, wingers and kiters.

Our center in Malcesine at Windsquare is one of the best and most popular spots to hanress the Pelèr, as here the wind has reached its full potential and consistency developing along the coastline from north to south.

We are located just a 180 meters north of the famous "Bus parking (Retellino)" spot.

To make the most of Pelér, we, along with many other watersport enthusiasts, start our sessions around 7:30 am.

      Ora - The south wind

The Ora starts when the Pelèr drops around midday and ends at sunset. This wind - known all around the world for its consistency during the summer months - blows from the south. Due to the cone-shaped form of lake Garda the Ora accelerates its speed the closer it gets to the north coast.

      Its wind force varies considerably:

      • Brenzone: 1/2 Beaufort
      • Campione: 3/4 Beaufort
      • Malcesine and Navene: 3/4 Beaufort
      • Torbole: 4/5 Beaufort

On days when the Ora wind is seemingly absent, there is often a local thermal breeze near the cliffs of Campione and north of Limone. The heating of the sun on the rocks creates pockets of wind close to the shore. To help kitesurfers and wingfoilers access these prime wind spots, we provide shuttles (lifts) to kiters and wingfoilers to reach these spots.

If - on a normal day with good weather - clouds gather over the mountains of Riva and Torbole and the Ora falls asleep, then this is a sign that thunderstorms are close and that Pelér or Bali (another north wind) can develop in a very short time due to the big temperature differences created by the rain.

It’s important to know that the these winds arrive quickly and unexpectedly and can quickly reach 40 knots! You can recognize it when looking towards the north and the water starts to form waves with white foam, with the wind directly behind the waves.
